Chapter 4: The Appointment

The next morning I dressed carefully for the ultrasound.

I chose a loose floral dress that still fit. I washed and styled my hair. I put on red lipstick even though my hands shook while I applied it. Not for Derek. For myself. For the baby who had done nothing to deserve any of this.

The clinic smelled of antiseptic, baby powder, and the quiet anxiety of waiting rooms. Dr. Evans greeted me with a warm, professional calm that made my throat tighten with unexpected gratitude.

“Are you here alone today?” she asked.

I nodded. “My husband says this baby isn’t his.”

She did not flinch or offer empty comfort. She simply guided me to the exam table and asked me to lie back.

The gel was cold. The monitor flickered to life. I held my breath as the gray static resolved into shape.

First a shadow.

Then a small, rapid flutter.

Then a heartbeat—strong, fast, unmistakably alive.

I covered my mouth. Tears spilled over without permission.

“Hello, my sweet love,” I whispered.

Dr. Evans gave a small, reassuring smile. Then she adjusted the transducer a fraction of an inch. The smile faded. Her brow furrowed. She zoomed in, checked the chart again for the date of my last period, and looked at me with a new, careful intensity.

“Mrs. Sarah… when exactly did you say your husband had his vasectomy?”

A chill moved through me. “Two months ago.”

She did not answer immediately. She pulled the monitor closer, studying the image with complete focus. The heartbeat continued its steady rhythm. Something else on the screen had captured her full attention.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, starting to sit up. “Is my baby okay?”

Dr. Evans lowered her voice.

“Your baby is perfectly fine. But I need you to listen to me very calmly.”

At that exact moment the exam room door opened without a knock.

Derek walked in. Jessica followed close behind.

“Perfect timing,” he announced. “Now the doctor can finally tell me exactly how many weeks along another man’s child really is.”

Dr. Evans turned slowly on her stool. She looked at Jessica. She looked at Derek. Then she looked back at the screen.
