Chapter 11: The Mother-in-Law
Derek’s mother appeared on my doorstep the following week without warning.
She stood on the porch holding a small gift bag, her expression arranged into careful remorse. I did not invite her inside. We spoke on the threshold while the afternoon light slanted across the front lawn.
“I may have been too quick to judge,” she said. “Derek told me the surgery made everything impossible. A mother believes her son.”
“A mother also chooses whether to arrive with trash bags or with questions,” I answered.

She had the grace to look away. The gift bag contained a soft blanket and a card with a generic message about new beginnings. I accepted both, thanked her for the gesture, and closed the door. Some repairs were too small and too late to matter. I placed the blanket in the nursery closet and did not display the card.
Later that evening Rebecca called to say Derek had agreed, in writing, to withdraw any claim of adultery and to acknowledge the medical dating in the settlement documents. It was not an apology. It was a legal necessity. I accepted it as such.
