Chapter 14: The Quiet Strength

Six months after the canceled wedding I stood in the backyard watching Luke chase bubbles across the grass. My mother sat on the porch steps with a cup of tea. My father was repairing a loose board on the fence, humming an old song under his breath. The ordinary sounds of a family that no longer had to perform for anyone filled the air.

My mother looked over at me.

“You could have destroyed them completely,” she said. “You chose not to.”

“I took back what was mine and protected what mattered,” I answered. “That was enough.”

She smiled, the same gentle smile she had given me when I was small and afraid of the dark.

“You became the woman I always knew you could be,” she said. “Strong enough to walk away and kind enough not to burn the bridge behind you.”

I sat down beside her and rested my head on her shoulder the way I had when I was a girl. The Sterling drama felt distant now, like a story that had happened to someone else.

Luke ran up to us with a bubble wand, face shining with delight.

“Mommy, look how big I can make them!”

I laughed and took the wand from his hand. We blew bubbles together until the sun began to set, ordinary and unremarkable and perfect.
