Chapter 15: What I Kept

A year after the wedding that never happened, I stood in the same café where I had told Ethan there was no way back.

This time I was alone.

I ordered a coffee and sat at the same table. The city moved past the window with its usual energy. Somewhere in that city the Sterlings continued their smaller, more careful lives. Olivia’s social circle had contracted. Ethan’s name no longer opened the same doors. They had survived, but they no longer commanded the narrative.

I took out my phone and looked at the last photo I had of Luke from that morning—covered in flour, laughing while he helped my mother bake cookies. No designer clothes. No performance. Just a little boy who knew he was loved without conditions.

I had lost a fiancé, a future mother-in-law, and the illusion of a perfect marriage.

I had kept my parents, my son, my name, and the quiet power that had always been mine.

I finished my coffee, left the café, and drove home to the house where no one would ever be shoved into a pool for the crime of being ordinary.

The woman who had once designed brochures for the Sterlings no longer existed.

In her place was Clara Devereux—daughter, mother, and the person who had finally chosen herself.

And that choice had been more than enough.
