Chapter 8: The Board

The emergency board meeting of Sterling Holdings began at seven the next morning.
I was not in the room, but the updates came in real time through the team executing the protocol. The evidence package—detailed records of preferential transfers, misrepresented collateral, and governance irregularities—had been delivered to federal investigators at midnight as promised. By eight o’clock two independent directors had already requested emergency audits. By nine, trading in related instruments had been temporarily halted pending clarification.
Olivia called my attorney at 9:47 a.m. The conversation was brief and one-sided. She demanded a meeting. She threatened litigation. She reminded my attorney that the Sterling name carried weight in this city. My attorney reminded her that the evidence now in federal hands carried more.
Ethan sent a single text at 10:12 a.m.
My mother is losing her mind. The board is asking questions I can’t answer. Please call me.
I did not reply.
Instead I sat with my parents in the hotel suite and watched the slow unraveling on financial news sites. The Sterling empire had been built on careful appearances and quiet leverage. Once that leverage turned against them, the structure proved far more fragile than the family had ever admitted.
My mother made fresh coffee and brought me a cup.
“You’re really going to bring the whole thing down?” she asked.
“Only the parts that were built on deception,” I answered. “The rest can stand or fall on its own merit.”
She studied me for a long moment, then nodded.

“I raised a daughter who knows how to protect what matters,” she said. “I’m proud of you.”
For the first time since the pool, I felt the weight in my chest lighten.
