Chapter 3: The Recording

My father didn’t call the police right away.

Instead, he made me sit on the edge of the bed while he stood between me and Grant like a wall. Evelyn had gone downstairs, but I could still hear her moving around in the kitchen, probably trying to figure out how to spin this.

“Show me your phone,” my father said quietly.

I hesitated.

“Claire.”

I unlocked my phone and handed it to him.

He didn’t scroll through my messages or photos. Instead, he opened the voice recorder app and saw the dozens of saved files. Then he looked at the small camera I had hidden on the bookshelf.

He didn’t ask how long I had been recording.

He just nodded once, like he had expected this.

“Get dressed,” he said. “We’re leaving.”

Grant stepped forward.

“You can’t just take her—”

My father turned to look at him. The look in his eyes made Grant stop mid-sentence.

“I’m not taking her,” my father said coldly. “She’s coming with me because she wants to. And because if she stays here, I have no doubt you’ll hurt her again.”

He looked at Grant’s uniform hanging on the back of the door.

“You’re an Army captain,” he continued. “You swore an oath. You’re supposed to protect people. Instead, you put your hands on your pregnant wife and let your mother help you hide it. Do you have any idea how that’s going to look when this goes to your command?”

Grant’s face had gone pale.

My father turned back to me.

“Pack what you need for a few days. We’ll come back for the rest later with police escort.”

I stood up slowly. My legs felt unsteady, but I forced myself to move. As I gathered some clothes, I could feel Grant watching me.

When I walked past him toward the door, he spoke in a low voice only I could hear.

“You’re going to regret this, Claire.”

I stopped and looked at him.

For the first time in months, I didn’t feel afraid.

“No,” I said quietly. “I’m not.”

Then I walked out of the bedroom with my father beside me.

For the first time in six months, I was leaving the house without permission.

And I wasn’t planning to come back.
