Chapter 7: The Choice

Three days later, I made a decision.
I was sitting on the small couch in the military housing, staring at my phone. Grant had tried to call me again from another number. This time, I answered.
“Allison— Claire,” he corrected himself quickly. “Thank God. Listen, we need to talk. This has gone too far. My career is on the line. My mother is being investigated. We can fix this if you just—”
“No,” I said, cutting him off. My voice was calm but firm.
There was a pause.
“What?”
“I’m not dropping the charges,” I said. “I’m not coming back. And I’m not going to let you or your mother manipulate me anymore.”
Grant’s voice changed. The fake concern disappeared, replaced by anger.
“You’re destroying everything,” he snapped. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing to this family?”
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“This family?” I repeated. “You mean the family that spent six months convincing me I was crazy while you put your hands on me? That family?”
Grant was silent.
I continued, my voice steady.
“I’m done being afraid of you, Grant. I’m done letting your mother speak for me. And I’m done pretending that what you did was okay.”
He tried one last time.
“Claire… please. Think about the baby.”
I closed my eyes.
“I am thinking about the baby,” I said quietly. “That’s why I’m doing this. Because I refuse to let our child grow up in a house where their mother is afraid of their father.”
Grant didn’t say anything for a long time.
When he finally spoke, his voice was low and bitter.
“You’re going to regret this.”
I didn’t hesitate.
“No,” I said. “I’m not.”
Then I ended the call.
I sat there for a while, staring at the phone in my hands. My heart was beating fast, but my mind was clear.

For the first time in six months, I had chosen myself.
And it felt like breathing again after being underwater for too long.
