Chapter 8: The Desperation

Grant and Evelyn did not go down quietly.

Three days after I refused to drop the charges, Evelyn showed up at the military housing facility. She wasn’t allowed inside the gated area, so she stood outside the main gate with a folder in her hands, demanding to speak with me.

When the guards refused, she started causing a scene. She told anyone who would listen that I was mentally unstable, that I was making up stories to ruin her son’s career, and that I was being manipulated by my father.

My dad found out about it before I did.

He came back to the housing unit that afternoon looking more serious than usual.

“Evelyn went to the gate,” he said. “She tried to hand over some documents claiming you have a history of mental health issues. She even brought old medical records from when you were a teenager.”

I felt a cold wave of anger.

“She’s twisting everything,” I said.

“I know,” my father replied. “But she’s getting desperate. Desperate people make mistakes. We’re going to use this against her.”

That same evening, Grant called me from a new number. This time, I answered.

“Claire,” he said, his voice low and strained. “You need to stop this. You’re destroying everything we built. My career is hanging by a thread. My mother is being investigated. If you keep going, you’re going to regret it.”

I stayed silent for a moment before answering.

“Regret what?” I asked calmly. “Protecting myself and my child from you?”

Grant’s tone shifted. The fake concern disappeared.

“You think you’re so smart,” he said coldly. “You think your father can protect you forever. But you have no idea what my family is capable of. We can make your life very difficult. We can make sure you never get full custody. We can—”

I cut him off.

“Record this,” I said clearly. “I am recording this call.”

There was a pause.

“You’re bluffing,” Grant said, but his voice had lost some of its confidence.

“I’m not,” I replied. “And if you ever threaten me or my child again, I will play this recording in court. Do you understand?”

Grant didn’t answer. He simply ended the call.

I saved the recording and sent it to both my father and Detective Ramirez.

That night, I sat on the couch with my hand on my belly and made a promise to my unborn child.

“I won’t let them scare me anymore,” I whispered. “I promise.”
