Chapter 10: What Comes After

A year after the trial, my life looked different.
I had been promoted within the task force. My work was still demanding, but I had started setting better boundaries. I no longer felt the need to hide who I was from everyone.
My relationship with Sophia had slowly improved. We weren’t close the way some sisters were, but we talked more often now. She had started visiting Grandma regularly, and I could tell she was trying to make up for the years she had spent looking the other way.
Grandma was doing well in her new assisted living facility. She had made friends, joined a book club, and even started teaching chess to some of the other residents. Every Sunday, I visited her and we played a game while she told me stories from her life.
One afternoon, while we were playing, she looked at me and asked a question I wasn’t expecting.
“Are you happy, Maya?”
I thought about it.
For so long, my life had been defined by work and secrets. I had spent years believing that being underestimated by my family was the price I had to pay for doing what I loved.
But now, things were different.
“I think I’m getting there,” I said honestly.
Grandma smiled.
“Good. You deserve to be happy. Not just successful. Not just right. Happy.”
I looked down at the chessboard.
For the first time in years, I believed her.
Because I had finally stopped hiding.

And in doing so, I had found something I didn’t even know I was missing.
Myself.
