Chapter 12: The Sister Who Stayed

Sophia and I had started talking more regularly after the trial.

She was still struggling with everything that had happened. She visited our parents in prison a few times, but each visit left her more confused and heartbroken. One evening, she came over to my apartment and broke down crying on my couch.

“I keep thinking maybe there was something I could have done,” she said. “Maybe if I had paid more attention, or asked more questions…”

I handed her a tissue and sat beside her.

“You didn’t know,” I said gently. “None of us did. They hid it well.”

Sophia wiped her eyes.

“I just feel so guilty. I spent years defending them. I told you to be more understanding. I told you they were just worried about you. And the whole time, they were hurting Grandma.”

I was quiet for a moment.

Then I said something I had been thinking about for weeks.

“You were raised by them too, Sophia. You learned to see the world the way they taught you. It’s not your fault that it took you longer to see the truth.”

Sophia looked at me with red, swollen eyes.

“How are you so calm about all of this?” she asked. “They tried to destroy Grandma. They lied about you for years. And you’re just… okay.”

I shook my head.

“I’m not okay,” I admitted. “I’m angry. I’m hurt. Some days I still can’t believe they did what they did. But I’ve spent too many years being angry at them. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life carrying that weight.”

Sophia was quiet for a long time.

Then she said, “I want to be better. I want to be the kind of sister you can actually rely on.”

I looked at her and smiled.

“You already are.”

It wasn’t perfect. Our relationship was still healing. But it was a start.

And for now, that was enough.
