Chapter 6: The Fallout

The arrest of my parents sent shockwaves through our family.
Within hours, my phone was flooded with messages. Relatives I hadn’t spoken to in years suddenly wanted to talk. Some were angry. Some were confused. A few were supportive, but most were simply stunned that quiet, “unemployed” Maya had been the one to bring the police to her own parents’ door.
My sister Sophia called me that evening, her voice tight with anger.
“What the hell is going on, Maya?” she demanded. “Mom and Dad are in jail because of you? Are you out of your mind?”
I sat on my couch, rubbing my temples.
“They were trying to steal from Grandma, Sophia. They isolated her, took her phone, and forced her to sign documents giving them control of her money and house. I have proof.”
There was a long pause.
Sophia’s voice softened slightly.
“Are you sure? Maybe it was a misunderstanding. They’re our parents, Maya. They wouldn’t do something like that.”
I closed my eyes.
“They did. And I have video and audio evidence. Grandma recorded some of it herself before they took her phone. I also have bank records showing suspicious transfers.”
Sophia was quiet again.
Then she said, “I don’t know what to believe right now. This is… a lot.”
“I know,” I said quietly. “But I didn’t do this to hurt the family. I did it to protect Grandma. She was scared, Sophia. They were manipulating her.”
After we hung up, I sat in the dark for a long time.
I had always been the outsider in my family — the one who didn’t fit the mold. Now I was the one who had torn everything apart. Even if I was right, even if I had saved Grandma, the cost felt heavier than I expected.
Still, I didn’t regret it.

Because for the first time in my life, I had chosen to protect someone who had always protected me.
And that mattered more than my parents’ reputation.
