Chapter 2: Six Months Earlier

My father died suddenly six months ago.

He collapsed in his office at Bennett Clinical Supply. The company he had spent thirty years building was left entirely to me. I was still grieving when Evan and Denise began circling.

At first, they were subtle.

Evan started asking detailed questions about the company’s finances during dinner. Denise began showing up at the house with “helpful” suggestions about how I should run things. They told me I was too emotional to make big decisions so soon after my father’s death. They said I should let Evan “handle the business side” while I focused on the hospital and the pregnancy.

I tried to be reasonable at first. I let Evan look at some financial reports. I even considered giving him access to certain accounts.

That was my mistake.

Within two months, I noticed discrepancies. Money was disappearing from the employee pension fund in small, careful amounts. Equipment was being written off at suspiciously low values. Contracts were being redirected to companies I had never heard of.

I hired a forensic accountant without telling Evan.

The report came back three weeks later.

Evan had been systematically draining the pension fund for over a year. He wasn’t even trying to save the company. He was moving money into shell companies connected to his brother’s failing construction business.

When I confronted him, he didn’t deny it.

He told me I was overreacting. That I didn’t understand how business worked. That I was too emotional because of the pregnancy. Evelyn stood beside him and nodded, telling me I was being dramatic and that I should trust my husband.

That was the first night he grabbed me hard enough to leave bruises.

After that, I stopped confronting him directly.

Instead, I started preparing.

I moved the most valuable medical equipment to a secondary location. I changed every password and access code. I had my attorney draft documents that would automatically transfer control of the company if anything happened to me. And I installed hidden cameras in the main warehouse.

I never told Evan I knew what he was doing.

I let him believe I was still the grieving, overwhelmed daughter who could be manipulated.

I was waiting.

And tonight, they had finally given me what I needed.
