Chapter 6: The Search

Forty-eight hours later, the police executed search warrants on Evan and Denise’s house and on the main warehouse of Bennett Clinical Supply.

I wasn’t allowed to be present during the searches, but Detective Reyes kept me updated.

They found more gasoline containers at the house, along with documents that appeared to be drafts of fake contracts and altered financial records. At the warehouse, they discovered signs that someone had tried to destroy hard drives and paper files before the fire. Several boxes of documents had been partially burned.

Most importantly, they found evidence that large sums of money had been transferred out of the employee pension fund into accounts connected to Evan’s brother.

When Reyes called to tell me, her voice was grim but satisfied.

“We have enough to charge both of them with arson, insurance fraud, and embezzlement,” she said. “The briefcase your sister-in-law was holding contained several key documents linking them to the pension transfers. It survived the fire just well enough for us to use it.”

I closed my eyes and let out a slow breath.

For the first time, I allowed myself to feel a small sense of relief.

They weren’t going to walk away from this.

Not this time.

That night, I sat alone in my apartment and looked at the small framed photo of my father on the shelf. He had always been a quiet, steady man. He had built his company through hard work and integrity. He would have hated what Evan and Denise tried to do to it.

“I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner, Dad,” I whispered. “But I see it now.”

I picked up my phone and sent a message to Margaret.

Me: Move forward with everything. I want them to lose it all.

Her reply came a few minutes later.

Margaret: Understood. We start tomorrow.

I put the phone down and leaned back against the couch.

The war had officially begun.

And for the first time since my father died, I felt like I was fighting on the right side.
