Chapter 7: The Breaking Point

Evan was released from the hospital two days later under police supervision. He was immediately placed under house arrest while awaiting formal charges.

Denise was released the same day but was also facing multiple charges.

That evening, Evan called me from his lawyer’s phone. I almost didn’t answer, but something made me pick up.

“Allison,” he said. His voice sounded defeated. “Please. We need to talk.”

I stayed silent.

“I know I messed up,” he continued. “I know I hurt you. But this… this is too much. The police, the charges, the company investigation. My mother is falling apart. We can still fix this if you just—”

“No,” I said, cutting him off. “We can’t.”

Evan was quiet for a moment.

Then he spoke again, his voice lower.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing. If you keep pushing, my family will come after you. They have resources. They have connections. You think your father can protect you forever?”

I felt a cold calm settle over me.

“Evan,” I said quietly, “you and your family have spent months trying to take everything my father built. You lied to me. You hurt me. And when that wasn’t enough, you tried to burn down the evidence.”

I paused.

“Now it’s my turn.”

Evan didn’t say anything for several seconds.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

“You’re going to destroy us.”

I looked out the window at the dark city.

“You already tried to destroy me,” I said. “I’m just finishing what you started.”

Then I ended the call.

I sat in the dark for a long time after that, my hand resting on my stomach.

I knew this wasn’t over.

Evan and his family were desperate now. Desperate people were dangerous.

But I wasn’t the same woman they had been manipulating for months.

I was done being afraid.

And I was done playing defense.

From now on, I was going to attack.
