Chapter 4: The First Move

I woke up early the next morning in the hotel room. The rain had stopped, but the sky was still gray and heavy. My lip was swollen and painful, and my body ached from being dragged across the floor.
I didn’t waste time feeling sorry for myself.
I took a shower, changed into clean clothes, and made myself a cup of coffee. While I drank it, I opened my laptop and logged into the company’s system using the backdoor access I had quietly created months ago.
Daniel still had no idea I could see almost everything.
I spent the next two hours going through the recent transactions. Just as I suspected, he had tried to move another large sum from the employee pension fund last night — probably to cover some personal debts or to prepare for whatever he thought was coming. The transfer had been blocked because I had already set up alerts on those accounts.
At 8:15 a.m., my phone rang. It was Margaret.
“Are you awake?” she asked.
“I’ve been up since six,” I replied.
“Good. I’ve already filed the emergency protective order. It should be approved by this afternoon. I’ve also sent a formal notice to Daniel’s lawyer about the divorce and the civil claims.”
I took a sip of coffee. “What about the company?”
Margaret was quiet for a second before answering.
“I’ve started the process of freezing several key accounts connected to the pension fund. By tomorrow morning, Daniel won’t be able to move any large amounts of money without triggering multiple alerts. I’ve also reached out to two of the major institutional investors. They’re… concerned.”
I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me.
“What do you need from me today?” I asked.
“I need you to stay hidden for now,” Margaret said. “Daniel is going to be angry when he realizes what’s happening. His parents will probably try to contact you. Don’t answer any unknown numbers. And don’t go back to the house yet.”
“I wasn’t planning to,” I said.
Margaret paused again.
“Elena,” she said, her voice more serious now. “Once we go public with the abuse and the financial misconduct, there’s no going back. His family will try to destroy your reputation. They’ll say you’re unstable, that you’re doing this for money, that you provoked him. Are you ready for that?”
I looked at my reflection in the dark laptop screen. My lip was still bruised, and there were faint marks on my neck.
“I’ve been ready for a long time,” I said quietly.
After I ended the call with Margaret, I opened a new document and started writing down everything I remembered from the night before — every word Daniel and his parents said, every action they took. I knew that details mattered in cases like this.
While I was writing, my phone vibrated with a message from an unknown number.
Unknown: Where the hell are you? We need to talk.
I didn’t reply.
A few minutes later, another message came in.
Unknown: Don’t make this harder than it needs to be, Elena. You’re still my wife.
I stared at the message for a long moment, then blocked the number.
Daniel was already starting to panic.
Good.
I closed my laptop and leaned back against the headboard, one hand resting on my stomach out of habit — even though there was no baby this time. The habit remained from years of stress.
I wasn’t afraid anymore.
I was just tired of waiting.
Tonight, I would move into the small apartment Margaret had arranged for me. Tomorrow, we would start dismantling everything Daniel thought belonged to him.

And I would make sure he understood one very important thing:
He should have never laid his hands on me.
