Chapter 7: The Boardroom

The board meeting was held in the main conference room on the top floor of Harrington & Sons Manufacturing. I didn’t attend in person. Instead, I joined through a secure video link from Margaret’s office, with my camera off and only my name displayed as “E. Blackwood – Majority Shareholder.”

Daniel sat at the head of the long table, trying to look composed. His father sat to his right, and two senior board members sat across from him. The atmosphere in the room was tense. Several investors had joined remotely as well, including Richard Hale.

Daniel started the meeting with his usual confident tone.

“Despite recent personal distractions,” he said, glancing briefly at the camera, “the company remains strong. I want to assure everyone that we are moving forward with our expansion plans…”

Richard Hale cut him off before he could finish.

“Daniel,” he said bluntly, “let’s skip the corporate speak. Several of us have received concerning information regarding the employee pension fund. There are also serious allegations of misconduct involving you personally. I think it’s time we address these issues directly.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Those are private matters,” he said. “They have nothing to do with the company’s performance.”

Richard leaned forward slightly.

“Actually, they do. When the CEO is accused of domestic violence and there are questions about missing pension money, it becomes very much our business. Investor confidence is already dropping.”

Another board member, an older woman named Patricia Lang, spoke up.

“I’ve reviewed the documents that were sent to us,” she said. “The transfers from the pension fund are difficult to explain. Daniel, can you clarify where that money went?”

Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it. He looked toward his father for help, but the older man stayed silent.

I watched quietly from my screen, my expression calm.

After a long, uncomfortable silence, Daniel finally spoke.

“These accusations are coming from my wife,” he said, his voice tight. “She’s going through a difficult time and is making wild claims. This is a personal matter that shouldn’t be discussed in a board meeting.”

Richard Hale’s voice was cold.

“Daniel, we’ve all seen the video. The one where you dragged your pregnant wife across the floor by her hair and threw her out of the house. That’s not a ‘personal matter.’ That’s a serious character issue. And when combined with the financial irregularities, it raises serious concerns about your ability to lead this company.”

Daniel’s face turned red. He looked directly at the camera, knowing I was watching.

“Elena,” he said, trying to sound reasonable, “you don’t have to do this. We can work things out privately. There’s no need to destroy everything we built together.”

I finally turned on my microphone.

“Daniel,” I said calmly, “we didn’t build anything together. You built a life on lies, abuse, and stolen money. I just happened to be the one who found the receipts.”

The room went completely silent.

Richard Hale looked at Daniel with open disgust.

“I think it’s time we take a vote,” he said. “I motion to temporarily suspend Daniel Harrington from his position as CEO pending a full investigation into both the financial allegations and his personal conduct.”

One by one, the board members raised their hands.

The vote was unanimous.

Daniel sat frozen in his chair as the reality of what just happened sank in.

I turned off my camera and microphone.

Margaret, who had been sitting beside me the entire time, closed her laptop and looked at me.

“Well,” she said quietly. “That’s the beginning of the end for him.”

May you like

I nodded, but I didn’t feel triumphant. I only felt tired.

Because even though I had won this round, I knew Daniel and his family would not go down without a fight.
