Chapter 5: The Cracks Begin to Show

Daniel called me seventeen times that day.

I didn’t answer a single one.

By late afternoon, his mother started calling too. Then his father. I blocked all of them.

Around 6 p.m., Margaret called me again.

“Daniel’s lawyer just contacted me,” she said. “They’re offering to settle quietly. They want you to sign a non-disclosure agreement and drop everything in exchange for a financial settlement.”

I let out a short, cold laugh.

“How much are they offering?”

“Two million dollars,” Margaret replied. “And they want you to sign over any shares you might still hold in the company.”

I was quiet for a moment.

“They’re scared,” I said.

“They’re very scared,” Margaret confirmed. “Especially after I mentioned the pension fund investigation. Daniel’s father called me personally an hour ago. He tried to play the ‘family’ card.”

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him that family doesn’t drag their daughter-in-law across the floor by her hair,” Margaret said dryly. “Then I hung up.”

I smiled faintly.

Margaret continued, “They’re going to get more aggressive soon. When the settlement offer doesn’t work, they’ll probably try to attack your reputation. Be prepared for that.”

“I am,” I said.

After the call, I sat in silence for a while, thinking.

I knew Daniel’s family well enough to understand how they operated. They believed money and connections could fix anything. They had spent years looking down on me, assuming I was weak and dependent.

They still didn’t understand who I really was.

That night, I received an email from one of the company’s major investors — a man named Richard Hale. He wanted to meet with me privately. He said he had “concerns about the current leadership” and had heard rumors about financial irregularities.

I forwarded the email to Margaret.

She replied within ten minutes:

Margaret: This is good. Very good. They’re already losing confidence in Daniel. We can use this.

I closed my laptop and walked over to the window.

Outside, the city lights were starting to come on. Somewhere out there, Daniel was probably sitting in his father’s office right now, trying to figure out how to stop what was coming.

He still thought he had time.

He didn’t.

By tomorrow, the first wave of consequences would hit. Accounts would be frozen. Questions would be asked. And the carefully built image of the perfect Harrington family would start to crack.

I touched my bruised lip gently.

They had spent years calling me useless.

Now they were about to learn just how dangerous a “useless” woman could be when she finally decided to fight back.
