Chapter 13: The Last Attempt

Two months after Michael was sentenced, I received a letter from him.
It was the first time he had tried to contact me since the trial.
I almost threw it away without opening it. But something made me read it.
Inside was a short, handwritten note.
Mom,
I know I don’t have the right to ask for anything. But I’m writing this because I’m scared. Prison is worse than I thought it would be. I’m alone here. No one visits me. No one writes to me. I made a lot of mistakes, but I’m still your son.
Please don’t leave me with nothing. I’m sorry for what I did. I really am.
Michael
I read the letter three times.
Then I sat down at my kitchen table and wrote a reply.
It was short.
Michael,
I am not your mother anymore. You stopped being my son the day you raised your hand against me. I will not visit you. I will not write to you. And I will not forgive you.
You made your choice. Now you have to live with it.
Do not contact me again.
I sealed the letter and mailed it the same day.
Two weeks later, I received another letter from him. This one was angrier.
He called me selfish. He said I had ruined his life. He said he hoped I died alone.
I didn’t read the whole thing. I tore it up and threw it away.
That night, I changed my phone number and asked the prison to block any further communication from him.
I was done.
May you like
Completely done.
For the first time, I truly believed that Michael would never be able to hurt me again.
