Chapter 15: What Remains

Three years have passed since that day in the backyard when I pressed the alarm.

Michael is still in prison. He will be eligible for parole in two more years, but even if he gets out, he will never be allowed near me again. I have a lifetime restraining order.

I still live in my small apartment. It’s not the big house I once had, but it’s mine. No one can take it from me. No one can force me to sign it away.

My daughter, Sarah, visits often. We talk on the phone almost every day. She has become one of my closest friends.

I still have bad days. My body still aches sometimes from the old injuries. I still have moments when I feel afraid. But those moments pass more quickly now.

Every Tuesday, I go to the senior center and volunteer. Sometimes I tell my story to new people who come in. Other times, I just listen.

One evening, while I was sitting on my balcony watching the sunset, I thought about everything that had happened.

I thought about the boy Michael used to be — the little boy who used to hold my hand and call me “Mama.”

I thought about the man he became — the man who hurt me for money.

And I thought about the woman I had become.

I was no longer the frightened old lady who stayed quiet and endured abuse.

I was someone who had fought back.

I was someone who had chosen herself.

I was someone who had turned her pain into protection — not just for herself, but for others.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

The air smelled like rain and flowers from the small garden I had planted on my balcony.

For the first time in many years, I felt at peace.

Michael had tried to take everything from me — my home, my money, my safety, and my dignity.

But in the end, he couldn’t take the one thing that mattered most.

He couldn’t take my will to survive.

And that, I realized, was the greatest victory of all.
