Chapter 4: The Night Everything Broke

The worst beating happened on a Thursday night in October.

Michael came home late and already angry. He had been drinking. I could smell it on him the moment he walked through the door.

He started demanding money again. When I told him I had already given him everything I could that month, he lost control.

He grabbed me by the hair and slammed me against the kitchen counter. Then he punched me in the ribs — once, twice, three times. I heard something crack inside my chest.

I fell to the floor gasping for air.

Michael stood over me, breathing hard.

“Sign the papers,” he said. “Or next time I won’t stop.”

He left me lying on the kitchen floor and went upstairs.

I don’t know how long I stayed there. Every breath hurt. I was terrified that he had punctured a lung.

Eventually, I managed to crawl to the phone. I called a taxi and told the driver to take me to the emergency room. I lied and said I had fallen down the stairs.

The doctor told me I had two broken ribs and severe bruising. He wanted to keep me overnight for observation, but I refused. I was too afraid Michael would find out where I was.

I went home the next morning while he was still asleep.

I packed a small bag with my medications, some clothes, my journal, and the USB drive containing all the videos. Then I called another taxi and went straight to the police station.

I was shaking so badly I could barely walk inside.

I asked to speak with a detective. When I sat down across from a woman named Detective Ramirez, I placed the USB drive on the table between us.

“My son has been beating me for almost a year,” I said. “I have video proof.”

Detective Ramirez looked at me for a long moment, then gently took the USB drive.

She watched the first video in silence.

When it ended, her expression had changed completely.

“Mrs. Bennett,” she said quietly, “you did the right thing by coming here. We’re going to help you.”

That was the first time in almost a year that I allowed myself to cry in front of another person.
