Chapter 12: Negotiation

Settlement talks began in a glass room where I could see traffic moving on the street below, each car distinct, each signal light a true red or green.

Brian sat with counsel and did not look at me directly. His attorney proposed a clean break with modest support and a mutual nondisparagement clause that would have buried the garage. Nora’s counter kept the garage in the factual preamble, required full equalization of the hidden stream of funds, and refused any clause that framed my surgery recovery as instability. We recessed twice. Coffee tasted like coffee. I read the revised pages myself.

By late afternoon a structure existed: the house to me under buyout terms that accounted for his dissipation toward the second household; accounts traced and rebalanced; the sedan sold with proceeds divided under formula; no gag on the factual history in court-adjacent contexts; a timeline for Brian to retrieve listed personal items under supervision. Samantha and Julian were acknowledged only where the law required acknowledgment—support analysis separate, not my hostage and not my project.

I signed the memorandum of understanding with a pen I could see against the paper. Brian signed. His hand shook. Mine did not. Outside on the sidewalk Dana hugged me hard enough to crack my back and said, “You’re done performing blind.” I said I was done performing, period.
