Chapter 15: After the Dark

Years later, the garage held only a lawn mower, winter tires, and a box of Christmas lights I had finally strung and taken down again on my own seasons.

The settlement had long since closed. Brian lived elsewhere with whatever honesty he had learned or failed to learn; I did not monitor the curriculum. My vision remained imperfect in low light and beautiful in full sun. The cane stood by the door for the days that asked for it. Marriage had ended. Dependence as a trap had ended. Sight had not fixed everything; it had made fixing possible.

On a clear evening I opened the garage for a rake and stood a moment in the concrete quiet. No bed. No folio. No calendar coded for a double life. I could see the oil stain near the water heater and the exact place where a nightstand had once cast a shadow I could not then name.

I had gone looking for Christmas lights.

I had found the truth stored in the one room he reserved for darkness.

And with eyes that still sometimes blurred at the edges, I locked the garage,

walked the visible path to my own door,

May you like

and went inside

without asking anyone
what the world
looked like.
