Chapter 11: Gwen’s Shadow
The first real break in Gwen’s story came from a place Liam had never thought to check.
While going through Nora’s old emails for anything that might tell the police where she had gone, he found a thread from late summer between Nora and her cousin. In it, Nora mentioned that Gwen had called her mother twice asking detailed questions about medical bills, insurance gaps, and whether any “family contribution” was expected. At the time, Nora had found it intrusive but not dangerous. She had written:
She acts concerned, but every question feels like she’s measuring how big a burden I’m about to become.
Liam read the line three times.
Gwen had never told him she knew Nora’s mother was seriously ill.
She had stood in his living room and spoken about Nora’s secrecy as if it were pure deception, when she already had reason to know there might be a medical crisis underneath it. That omission changed the color of everything she had said on the night of the argument. Her speed. Her certainty. Her insistence that Liam harden himself and keep Nora outside until she confessed.
She had not merely reacted to a suspicious transfer.
She had steered him.
Liam called the clinic again and asked one careful question: had anyone other than Nora made inquiries about the account balance or payment status in the past month? After a long pause and a refusal to give names, the clerk said only that “another family member had called more than once.”
Another family member.
Liam sat back in his chair as a cold understanding took shape.
