Chapter 9: The Weight

Guilt did not arrive like a single blow. It settled over him in layers.

Every hour Nora stayed missing added another one.

Liam kept replaying the moment she had stood by the sliding door, eyes wet, asking him to let her explain. He remembered the exact pitch of her voice. He remembered how quickly he had chosen the version of events that protected his pride. He remembered Gwen’s hand on his shoulder afterward, steady and approving, as if he had finally become the kind of man she respected.

That approval now made him sick.

He tried calling hospitals. Nothing under Nora’s name. He tried a second round of the parking structures and side streets near their building. Nothing. When a neighbor asked if everything was all right, Liam heard himself say, “Family issue,” and the words tasted like cowardice.

By late afternoon, he could no longer stand the sound of Gwen’s practical advice in his head. She had always been the strong one, the decisive one, the person who kept the family upright after their father died. He had spent years mistaking her force for wisdom.

But wisdom would have made room for a full answer before punishment.

Wisdom would not have been so eager to put Nora out in the cold.

Liam stood in the living room with Nora’s coat in his hands and finally let the thought form all the way through:

If something had happened to her because of that locked door, then Gwen’s certainty would not be the thing that saved him.

It would be the thing that condemned him.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered so fast he nearly dropped it.

“Mr. Liam?” a man’s voice said. “This is Officer Hanlon with Grand Rapids PD. We’re following up on a possible welfare concern related to your wife. Are you at home right now?”

Liam closed his eyes.

May you like

The outside world had arrived.

And it had arrived too late for easy explanations.
