Chapter 12: The Confrontation

He confronted her that evening in the kitchen of the house where they had grown up.

Gwen was at the table with a cup of tea, calm in the way she always became when she felt morally armed. Liam did not sit down. He placed Nora’s note, the printed transfer list, and a copy of the email on the table between them.

“You knew her mother was sick,” he said.

Gwen glanced at the papers, then back up at him.

“I knew Nora claimed that.”

“No. You called the clinic. You asked about the bills. You knew enough to understand why she might be moving money, and you still pushed me to treat her like a thief.”

Gwen’s mouth tightened.

“I pushed you to protect yourself. That woman has always pulled at the edges of your life—her family, her soft heart, her quiet little secrets. I watched our mother get eaten alive by other people’s needs after Dad died. I wasn’t going to watch the same thing happen to you.”

There it was. Not justice. Not truth.

Control.

“You let me lock her outside in freezing weather,” Liam said. “You stood there and made it sound like strength.”

“And if she had simply told the truth from the beginning, none of this would have happened.” Gwen stood up, color rising in her face. “Don’t you put your guilt on me. You made the choice. You turned the lock.”

“I made the choice with your voice in my ear.”

“Then maybe for once you should thank me for having one.”

The words landed with such clean cruelty that Liam needed a second before he could speak again.

“She’s missing, Gwen.”

“She’s hiding.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know women like her,” Gwen snapped. “And I know you. You’ll burn down your whole life out of guilt if someone doesn’t stop you.”

Liam looked at his sister and saw, not the protector he had always imagined, but a woman so terrified of losing control that she would rather break a marriage than share her brother with anyone she could not dominate.

“Don’t come to the apartment again,” he said.

Gwen’s face stiffened. “You’re choosing her after all this?”

“I’m choosing the truth,” Liam replied. “For once.”

He left before she could answer.
