Chapter 13: The Fall

Horizon Pavilion fell in the weeks that followed, not with a single dramatic raid but with the slow, grinding collapse of exposed secrets.
William turned on his father. The files Ethan had carried, combined with Walter’s records and the testimony of survivors, painted a picture too ugly to ignore. Federal investigators moved in. Accounts were frozen. The lower levels were raided. Children with gifts were found in rooms that looked more like labs than hospital wards.
Victor Carter was arrested in a private wing of the hospital he had built to exploit them. He did not go quietly. He screamed about legacy and greater good until the doors closed behind him.
Celeste disappeared before the warrants could reach her. Some said she left the country. Others said she was still pulling strings from the shadows. William did not look for her. He had a son to raise and a marriage that had never been real.
Ethan’s gift remained a secret to the world, but not to the people who mattered. He used it twice more in the chaos—once to save a wounded agent, once to bring back a child who had coded during the raid. Each time the cost was higher. Each time Walter held him afterward and whispered that they would find another way.
