Chapter 15: The Boy Who Brought Him Back

Years later, Ethan stood in the same hospital room where he had brought Noah back.

The machines were quiet now. The bed was empty. The window looked out on a city that no longer felt like a cage.

Walter stood beside him, older, frailer, but still the wall between Ethan and the world that wanted to use him.

“You saved him,” Walter said.

“I saved a lot of people,” Ethan replied. “But I almost lost myself doing it.”

The gift was still there. It always would be. But Ethan had learned the cost. He used it rarely now, only when the need was greater than the price. He had a life. A name. A future that did not belong to Horizon Pavilion or any other machine that saw children as resources.

Outside the window, Noah and Mia were waiting in the car. The boy who had been dead and the girl who had carried him through the dark had become family in the years since the storm. Not by blood. By choice.

Ethan touched the window glass.

“Come back,” he whispered, not to the room, not to the past, but to himself—the boy who had walked into a hospital room with dirty hands and a gift that could break him.

The boy who had brought someone back.

And in doing so, had come back himself.

The city lights glittered below.

The gift remained.

But the boy who carried it was no longer alone.
