Chapter 14: The Quiet After
The quiet after the fall was not peace.
It was adjustment.
Ethan lived with Walter in a small house outside the city, far from the lights and the labs. He went to school under a new name. He learned to control the gift instead of letting it control him. The nosebleeds became less frequent when he stopped using it for every small thing. Walter taught him the difference between saving and playing God.
Noah grew stronger. William brought him to visit once a month, careful and quiet, as if afraid the boy who had brought his son back might vanish like his sister had. The two boys played in the yard with the cautious curiosity of children who had both survived things they should not have.
William and Walter spoke sometimes on the porch, two men bound by loss and the long shadow of Victor Carter. They did not become friends. They became something more useful: allies in making sure no one rebuilt what had been torn down.
Mia stayed with them for a while, then found a family that wanted her, not as a hero or a burden, but as a child. She kept the bracelet. She kept the memory of the mother who had told her to run with a baby in her arms. She kept the promise that she would pay when she grew up.
