Chapter 11: The Limited Contact

Near the end of the fifth month Christopher’s name appeared on my phone.

The call was brief. He had learned, through a mutual acquaintance, that I was no longer staying with Patrick. He asked where I was living and whether the arrangement was “stable.” I told him the address was private, the arrangement was sufficient, and that I was not seeking assistance. He mentioned that Jacqueline had been concerned. I answered that concern offered after a door has already closed does not require a detailed reply. He started to say something about the investors and the timing of that evening. I ended the call before the sentence could become an explanation I had no interest in receiving.

Victoria sent a short message two weeks later. It expressed relief that I had “found a solution” and offered to help look into “better long-term options” if needed. I replied once: the current arrangement was permanent enough, and no further options were required from her. She did not write again.

The two exchanges changed nothing in the apartment. The rent continued to clear. The caregiver continued her days. The cane rested against the same wall each evening. Whatever calculations my older children made about image, schedules, or the opinions of business partners remained their calculations. They no longer intersected with the question of whether I had a bed.
