Chapter 14: The Letter’s Last Work text

Once, in the early months of the second year, I took the letter out again and read it at my own table under the ordinary light of late afternoon.

The sentences had not changed. My husband had watched the pattern, prepared the counterweight, and timed the release for the moment the pattern completed itself. He had not asked me to punish anyone. He had asked me only to use what he left without guilt and without requesting permission from the ones who had already refused. I had done so. The account still covered what it needed to cover. The apartment still answered to my name. The cane still rested against the wall instead of being leaned against someone else’s doorframe while I waited for a decision that would never come.

I folded the pages, returned them to the envelope, and placed the envelope in the drawer where it belonged—no longer urgent, only complete. Its work was finished. Mine was simply to continue living inside the space it had made possible.
