Chapter 8: The Quiet Establishment text

By the end of the first week the apartment held a bed, a table, two chairs, and the ordinary utensils required to cook without relying on anyone else’s kitchen. The caregiver service I arranged through a referral from the bank’s elder-support desk came three mornings a week—enough to manage the tasks the cane made slow, not enough to recreate dependence. I kept the distance to Patrick’s place deliberate: close enough for ordinary family contact, far enough that no one could mistake the arrangement for a return to four people stretching a single paycheck.

I did not telephone Christopher. I did not telephone Victoria. The letter’s instruction on that point remained clear, and the memory of the mansion door and the medical-office gate remained clearer. When Patrick asked once whether I intended to tell them where I had gone, I answered that the information was available if they ever chose to ask, and that I would not be the one to carry it to doors that had already closed.
