Chapter 10: What I Kept

One year later, I stood in the backyard of my new house, watering the small garden I had planted.

The tomatoes were coming in nicely. The herbs were thriving. It was nothing compared to the large backyard I once had, but it was mine. And that made all the difference.

Sarah visited every other weekend now. Sometimes she stayed for dinner. Sometimes we just sat and talked. She was working again, renting a small apartment across town, and slowly rebuilding her life without Michael.

She had filed for divorce six months earlier. Michael didn’t fight it. He had nothing left to fight with.

I hadn’t spoken to him since the day I left the house.

I didn’t need to.

My life had become quieter, but in the best way possible. I no longer carried the weight of trying to please people who only valued me for what I could give them. I no longer felt the need to prove my worth to anyone.

I still thought about the house sometimes. Not with anger, but with a strange sense of closure. It had been a beautiful home, but it had also become a place where I was no longer respected.

I was better off without it.

That evening, as the sun began to set, Sarah arrived with a small cake.

“It’s not much,” she said, placing it on the outdoor table. “But I wanted to celebrate something.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Celebrate what?”

She smiled.

“Today marks one year since you walked out of that house and took your life back. I thought… maybe we could mark it as a good day instead of a painful one.”

I looked at my daughter.

Then I looked at the small garden, the quiet backyard, and the peaceful evening around us.

“You’re right,” I said. “It is a good day.”

We sat together as the sky turned orange and pink, eating cake and talking about nothing important.

For the first time in a very long time, I felt content.

I had lost a house.

I had lost the version of my family I once believed in.

But I had gained something far more valuable.

May you like

I had gained my peace.

And no one would ever take that from me again.
