Chapter 9: The Conversation I Never Expected

Two months after everything began, Sarah asked to meet in person.

We met at a small café near my new apartment. She looked tired but healthier than the last time I saw her. She had lost some weight, and there were dark circles under her eyes, but she seemed more grounded.

We ordered coffee and sat in silence for a few minutes.

Finally, she spoke.

“I left Michael,” she said quietly.

I looked up, surprised.

She continued before I could ask.

“I couldn’t stay with him after everything that happened. He kept blaming you. He kept saying you were being cruel and selfish. He refused to take any responsibility. I couldn’t listen to it anymore.”

She looked down at her coffee.

“I know I was wrong too. I should have stood up for you that night at dinner. I should have told him the house was yours and that he had no right to bring his family without asking. But I was scared. I was scared of starting over again after my divorce. I thought if I just went along with him, things would be easier.”

She looked up at me, eyes glistening.

“I was wrong. And I’m sorry.”

I studied my daughter for a long moment.

Then I reached across the table and placed my hand over hers.

“I’m not ready to forgive everything yet,” I said honestly. “But I’m willing to try. One step at a time.”

Sarah nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks.

“That’s more than I deserve,” she whispered.

We sat together for another hour, talking about small things. For the first time in years, the conversation didn’t feel forced or painful.

It felt like the beginning of something new.
