Chapter 3: The Documents Already Filed
By the time Sarah and Michael were asleep, everything was already in motion.
That afternoon, while they were at work, I had met with my attorney, Thomas Hale. We had spent two hours reviewing and signing documents.
First, we updated the trust.
The new instructions were clear: upon my death, the entire trust would go to a foundation that supported elderly individuals who had been financially exploited by family members. Sarah’s name was removed completely. She would receive nothing.
Second, we prepared a new will that reinforced the trust’s instructions.
Third, we filed paperwork to remove Sarah and Michael as authorized users on several of my accounts. The process had already begun.
And finally, Thomas prepared a formal letter that would be delivered to both Sarah and Michael on Monday morning. It would inform them that they had thirty days to vacate the property, as they had no legal claim to it.
I had also scheduled an email to be sent automatically at 8:00 a.m. on Monday. It would go to both of them, along with copies to my attorney and a few trusted contacts.
The email contained a single sentence:
“The blue folder on the kitchen island contains everything you need to understand what happens next.”
Inside that folder were copies of the deed, the trust documents, the bank records showing their unauthorized spending, and a letter explaining that I had known about their plans for weeks.
They thought they were pressuring a helpless old man.
They had no idea that the helpless old man had been preparing for this moment since the day they moved in.
I closed my laptop, turned off the kitchen light, and went upstairs.
