Chapter 11: The Official Clarification and Its Limits

On the twelfth day the legal-aid attorney requested the written clarification Marcus had offered. The official note that came back was brief and carefully bounded. It restated that Commander Reed had no prior personal relationship with me at the time of the flight, that the seating arrangement had been a temporary request to reduce unwanted recording, and that no financial or housing support of any kind had been discussed or provided. The language was exact enough to close the most useful line of attack Jason had been using. It was also exact enough to leave the older photograph untouched. “No prior personal relationship with me” did not address a prior relationship with Jason. The distinction sat quietly inside the official wording, invisible to anyone who did not have the faded print.

Jason’s attorney acknowledged receipt and did not file an immediate motion. The pause in formal pressure held. Informally, Jason continued to post images of his new routine and, once, a pointed comment about people who “perform stability for the camera while asking the court for help.” He did not name me. He did not need to. The people who still followed both of us understood the target. I documented the post, added it to the file, and did not reply. The legal-aid attorney advised that the combination of the official clarification and the absence of any actual cohabitation evidence made a successful support-modification claim unlikely in the near term. Unlikely was not the same as impossible. I kept the file current and the guest-room routines stable.

Sarah reported that the neighbor’s curiosity had faded. No one had knocked. No reporter had called. The public life of the viral image appeared to be slowing as newer distractions took its place online. The private life of the older photograph did not slow. It remained in the suitcase, unanswered, a single physical object that linked the man who had asked for a favor to the man who was still trying to use the result of that favor against me. I checked the locked folder on my phone once each evening to confirm the copy was still there. Then I closed it and returned to the ordinary work of keeping Clara fed, changed, and unaware that the adults around her were navigating a set of images neither of them had planned to need.
