Chapter 7: The Reply from the Secondary Email

Marcus’s response arrived the following morning as a short, precise message from the address he had given me. He confirmed receipt of Jason’s texts and the circulating links. He stated that public-affairs guidance already covered unplanned imagery of personnel in civilian settings, and that he would not be issuing any personal statement. He added one operational note: if Jason’s attorney attempted to characterize the flight as evidence of an established household or financial support from him, the factual record showed a single commercial flight, no prior acquaintance, and no exchange of resources. He offered to provide a written clarification to that effect through official channels if my counsel formally requested it. The tone remained the same as the phone call—measured, limited, and free of any suggestion that the twenty minutes on the aircraft had created an ongoing private obligation. I forwarded the message to the legal-aid attorney, who replied that a clean, official clarification of non-relationship would be useful if Jason pushed the support-modification angle further. I did not request the clarification yet. I filed the offer and waited to see how far Jason intended to carry the photograph.
