Chapter 8: The Pressure on the Guest Room

Sarah did not ask me to leave. She did ask, carefully, whether the attention around the photograph was likely to reach her address. A neighbor had already mentioned seeing “something online about a military guy and a woman with a baby” and had glanced too long at the travel crib visible through the living-room window. Sarah’s landlord lived two streets over. The guest-room arrangement had always been temporary and informal; it had not been designed to absorb public curiosity or residual divorce conflict. I told her the truth: I had no control over the image, Jason was using it, and I was documenting every contact while avoiding any new material he could exploit. I offered to begin looking for a short-term rental or a women’s-housing referral that same week. Sarah shook her head and said we would reassess in ten days if the situation remained quiet on the street. The conversation stayed practical. Underneath it sat the shared understanding that the borrowed shoulder on the flight had produced consequences neither of us had budgeted for when she offered the room.
