Chapter 10: The Medical Record

The medical evaluation took place the afternoon after the locks were changed.

I drove my mother to a clinic that had no connection to Brandon or Vanessa and sat with her while the nurse practitioner documented every visible bruise, measured the range of motion in her shoulders, and recorded her account of how the injuries had occurred. My mother spoke in short, precise sentences. She did not embellish. She did not minimize. The clinician photographed the marks under consistent lighting and noted the pattern of old and new contusions. The report was forwarded to Patricia the same day and added to the file that already contained the deed, the seating chart, the folding-bed photographs, and the written notice to vacate.

On the drive home my mother sat with her hands folded in her lap and watched the familiar streets without the taut readiness she had carried for two years. When we pulled into the driveway she looked at the front door as if confirming that no one else’s key would turn in the new lock.

“It’s quiet,” she said.

“It will stay quiet,” I answered.
