Chapter 11: Residual Contact
Brandon called on the fifth day.
He did not apologize for the slap or the bruises or the two years of enforced labor. He framed the conversation around logistics and grievance: Vanessa was upset, the timeline had been aggressive, they had contributed to the household, and family should have found a softer resolution. I listened without interruption until the sequence finished.
“You stood a few feet away while she was hit,” I said. “You lived in the house while she slept on a folding bed and hid marks under her sleeves. Soft resolution was available every day you chose not to use it. The notice has been executed. The locks are changed. Any further contact about returning to the property will go through the attorney. Contact about our mother’s well-being can happen if it is respectful and does not attempt to reopen occupancy. That is the entire remaining channel.”

He started to recycle the language of shared blood and temporary misunderstanding. I ended the call when it became clear he was still arguing for a version of events the evidence had already closed. Vanessa did not call. Her silence was the more accurate communication: the performance had required an audience and a stage she no longer possessed.
Patricia confirmed that no legal challenge to the notice had been filed. The occupancy was finished.
