Chapter 8: The First Night

I did not leave the house that night.

Vanessa and Brandon retreated to the master bedroom that still held her mother’s belongings. I moved my mother’s few remaining clothes from the garage boxes back into the smaller second bedroom that had once been mine, then helped her transfer from the folding bed to a proper mattress I pulled from storage. She sat on the edge of the bed with the cold cloth still folded in her hands and looked at the closed door as if expecting Vanessa to reopen it with new instructions.

“They’ll be angry,” she said.

“They are already angry,” I answered. “Anger does not restore a claim the deed never gave them. You sleep in a real bed tonight. Tomorrow we begin the formal notice and the inventory of what leaves with them.”

I documented the condition of every room with time-stamped photographs while the house was still under the residual tension of the dinner. Patricia—reached by phone after the last guest departed—confirmed that a written notice to vacate could be delivered in the morning and that a locksmith and a neutral witness should be present when keys were recovered. She also advised an immediate medical evaluation for the bruises, both for treatment and for the contemporaneous record. I scheduled it for the following afternoon.

Vanessa’s mother slept in the master bedroom one final night. I did not engage her. The performance of authority had ended when the deed landed among the wine glasses. What remained was logistics.
