Chapter 2: The Evidence

The evidence changed everything in minutes.

Elena handed me the flash drive with trembling hands. I plugged it into my laptop right there in the hallway while the paramedics checked on my mother.

The video was clear.

Vanessa slapping my mother.

Vanessa locking the door.

Vanessa taking away her medicine and saying, “If you complain again, I’ll make sure Daniel thinks you’re crazy.”

I watched it once.

Then I watched it again.

My hands shook.

The paramedics loaded my mother into the ambulance. I rode with her, holding her hand the entire way to the hospital.

At the hospital, I called my attorney, Cynthia Ross.

“Activate everything,” I said. “Divorce. Asset freeze. Criminal charges.”

Cynthia didn’t ask questions. She knew my marriage had been dying for years.

I sat in the waiting room while doctors examined my mother. Elena sat beside me, still in her gray uniform, her cheek swollen from Vanessa’s slap.

“Thank you,” I said.

She looked down. “I should have told you sooner.”

“You told me when it mattered most.”

The doctor came out.

“Your mother is severely dehydrated and malnourished. There are signs of long-term abuse. We’re admitting her.”

I nodded.

The evidence was clear.

Vanessa had been starving and abusing my mother for months.

And I had been too blind to see it.
