Chapter 3: The Arrest

The arrest happened that night.
The police arrived at the hospital after reviewing the flash drive. They took my statement, Elena’s statement, and my mother’s statement.
Then they went to the house.
Vanessa was arrested in the living room, still wearing the silk blouse she had worn when she hit my mother.
She laughed when the officers read her her rights.
“This is ridiculous,” she said. “Daniel, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
I stood in the doorway and said nothing.
The officers put her in the patrol car.
She looked at me through the window as they drove away.
The arrest was quiet.
But it was the beginning of the end of the life she had built on cruelty.
I went back to the hospital and sat with my mother until she fell asleep.
Elena stayed too.
The three of us — a son, a mother, and the maid who had protected her — sat in the quiet room while the machines beeped steadily.

The arrest was done.
The healing was just beginning.
