Chapter 15: The Doorway

Julian came home at 4:47 on a Thursday, a year after the first early arrival, and heard music before the oak door fully opened.

He set the briefcase down without sound, walked the corridor, and stopped at the threshold of the living room. Clara was on the rug. Leo had the guitar. Toby had the bongos. Rafi sat a little apart with a real guitar, filling the gaps. The song was the same one and also not the same—more confident, a little faster, owned by the boys in a way it had not been at the beginning.

Julian leaned against the wall, not because he needed to keep from collapsing, but because he wanted the moment to arrive without him interrupting it.

Leo saw him and grinned. “Dad—listen to the hard chord.”

Toby patted the floor. “Sit. You’re late for the beat.”

Clara met his eyes over the toy microphone and raised an eyebrow in mild challenge. He crossed the rug, took the shaker Toby offered, and found the count.

The house, vast and expensive and once unbearably quiet, held the noise of four people making something imperfect together. Julian Sterling, who had come home early one Thursday too exhausted to perform his own life, stayed on the floor until the song was finished and the next one began.

He did not think about the merger calendar.

He thought about absolutely nothing except the beat, his sons’ faces, and the woman who had taught the mansion how to make a sound that meant someone was home.
