Chapter 6: Friction

Not everyone approved.
Julian’s sister, after a Sunday visit, stood in the foyer and said, “She’s the housekeeper, Julian. The boys are attached. That becomes a problem when she leaves.”
“Then she won’t leave because of me,” he said.
“That’s not how employment works.”
“It’s how this house is going to work.”
His head of household staff requested clarification of duties. Julian provided it in writing: Clara’s primary role remained the house; the afternoon hours with the boys were authorized; no one was to interfere with the music or treat it as a breach of hierarchy. The note was posted. The comments stopped reaching his ears.

At the office, an investor joked about early departures and soft priorities. Julian finished the meeting, closed the deal that needed closing, and left at 4:12. The joke did not follow him into the car.
The friction taught him something useful. The cold house had been easy to maintain because it asked nothing of his presence. A living house required him to disappoint people who preferred the old silence. He found he could live with that disappointment.
