Chapter 9: Clara’s Boundary

Clara asked for a meeting on a Sunday evening after the boys were asleep.

They sat in the kitchen, the formal rooms left dark. She kept her hands around a mug and her shoulders straight.

“I need the line clear,” she said. “I can give the afternoons and the music and the nights when they call out. I cannot become a replacement for a mother or a permanent solution you don’t have to think about. If the attachment becomes a reason for people to whisper, or for the boys to be afraid of losing staff again, we stop and redesign. I won’t be the soft thing that breaks later.”

Julian listened without interrupting.

“What do you want added to the terms?” he asked.

“Predictable time off. A second person trained on the boys’ rhythms so I’m not the only emergency exit. And you keep coming home while it’s light, often enough that I’m support, not the whole structure.”

“Done.”

She studied him. “Just like that?”

May you like

“Just like that. You told me what the house was missing. I’m not going to use you to avoid learning it.”

Clara exhaled, the formality easing a fraction. “Then I’ll stay.”
