Chapter 7: Toby’s Nightmare

Toby woke screaming on a Wednesday after midnight.

Julian reached the room first, heart hammering, and found Clara already in the doorway in a sweater over pajamas, calm and quiet. She stepped back when she saw him, handing over the space without making it a test.

Julian sat on the edge of the bed and let Toby climb into his lap, hot face against his shirt. The boy’s breathing slowed in uneven steps.

“I dreamed the music stopped,” Toby whispered. “And nobody came.”

Julian looked at the door. Clara had not left the hallway. She was not intruding. She was available.

“The music didn’t stop,” Julian said. “I’m here. Clara’s here. Leo’s across the hall. Nobody left.”

Toby’s hand found the fabric of his father’s sleeve and held on. Eventually the grip loosened into sleep. Julian stayed until the weight went heavy and even. When he stepped into the hall, Clara was still there.

“He does that when the week has been too quiet,” she said softly. “Not always. Enough that I listen for it.”

Julian nodded. Another thing the laminated schedule had never recorded.

“Thank you for coming,” he said.

“I live twenty steps away,” she answered. “It’s not heroism.”

It was, however, the difference between a house that monitored children and a house that heard them.
