Chapter 1: The Guest List

My father ordered the restaurant staff to prevent me from joining my own family’s dinner.

“You are not on the guest list,” he said coldly, as though excluding his daughter from her mother’s birthday celebration was perfectly normal.

I simply smiled, placed my mother’s gift beside her seat, and turned to leave.

Then my sister’s boyfriend shot to his feet.

“That woman is my boss.”

Every conversation at the table stopped.

The maître d’ had barely glanced at the reservation list on his tablet when my father spotted me approaching.

His face tightened instantly.

“Olivia, what are you doing here?”

My mother turned in her chair, the burgundy fabric of her dress catching the warm restaurant lights. The smile she had been wearing vanished the moment she saw me.

Beside her, my younger sister Melissa leaned back in her emerald gown and gave me the same satisfied expression she had used since we were children.

“You were not invited,” Dad said again.

I kept walking toward them.

The Charleston was one of Boston’s most prestigious restaurants. It had exposed brick walls, soft amber lighting, spotless white tablecloths, and staff trained to remain calm no matter how uncomfortable the situation became.

Yet everyone seated at my family’s table had turned to watch me.

Everyone except Jake.

Three days earlier, my father had called to tell me I was no longer welcome at my mother’s fifty-fifth birthday dinner.

He offered vague explanations about family tension, Melissa’s feelings, and the importance of avoiding conflict on Mom’s special evening.

It was the same pattern my family had followed my entire life.

Melissa became upset.

I was expected to fix it.

She cried.

I was blamed.

Despite his warning, I put on the sapphire-blue dress I had bought for the celebration, placed an antique brooch inside a cream-colored box, and went to the restaurant.

Something about my sudden removal from the dinner had never felt right.
