At Meridian the residual effects remained limited and manageable.
Jake submitted an updated emergency-contact form within the week. He continued to perform at the level that had earned the promotion. I neither punished nor elevated him in response to the personal entanglement that had ended; the work remained the measure. Colleagues who had not been present at the Charleston registered nothing unusual. The small number of people who had heard fragments of the story received no confirmation or expansion from me. Office life absorbed the event the way it absorbed most private disruptions—by continuing.
Erin met me for coffee on the seventh day and listened to the condensed sequence without requiring dramatization.
“She built a version of you that could only survive if you stayed away from the table,” Erin said. “You walked in. The version failed. That is the entire mechanism.”
“Yes,” I said.
“And you’re not going to help them rebuild a softer version of the same arrangement.”
