At Meridian the months advanced without residual turbulence.
Jake continued to perform at the level that justified the promotion. The client account he had helped stabilize remained secure. I conducted his subsequent reviews on the same criteria I applied to every other direct report: results, judgment, reliability. The personal entanglement that had ended at the Charleston was not permitted to contaminate the professional measure, either as penalty or as artificial protection. He updated his emergency contacts, kept the boundary clean, and did not attempt to convert the restaurant confrontation into an ongoing private alliance. That discipline made the working relationship sustainable.
Erin marked the three-month point with a single observation over coffee.
“They keep waiting for you to miss the role,” she said. “The absorber. The one who smooths it over so Melissa doesn’t have to sit with what she built.”
“I don’t miss it,” I said.
