Erin noted the anniversary of the dinner with a single raised eyebrow across the coffee table.

That was the entire discussion. We moved on to a acquisition target and the staffing model for the next two quarters. The family sequence required no further analysis. It had delivered its information on the night Jake stood up and said the title out loud. Everything after that had been the predictable sound of a structure losing its central load-bearing claim.

I no longer reviewed the evening for emotional residue. The facts had settled into their final positions: the exclusion, the timed fabrication, the recognition, the exit. I had placed the gift. I had allowed the truth to occupy the space they had tried to keep empty. I had left the table to the people who had insisted I did not belong at it. The subsequent silence was not a pause. It was the logical endpoint of a pattern that could not continue once the required absence was refused.
